What do people, cars, and iPhone’s have in common?
They all need to refuel from time to time!
I mean, pouring gasoline into your phone’s headphone jack probably won’t get you the same results as plugging it into your charger.
Stuffing food into your car’s fuel tank is also counterproductive.
Similarly, what is rejuvenating for one person could be draining for another, so it is crucial to know what works for you.
If you find yourself thinking you’re too busy to slow down, here are some of the myths about self-care that people believe:
- “If I take time for myself, isn’t that selfish?”: If you’re worried about this, your heart is in the right place, but there is no need to fret! Just like eating, drinking, or sleeping isn’t selfish, taking care of your psychological and emotional needs is healthy. You will end up being able to pour out into those around you with more energy when you are refreshed.
- “Some people may need self-care, but I don’t”: It all depends on your definition of self-care. If you hear “self-care” and think eating an entire pint of ice-cream (we’ve all done it before…) or pulling a muscle trying to do yoga, maybe that’s not your thing. But the bottom line is that everyone needs to take time to rest and destress so that they’re ready to tackle the next big thing. Whether that is reading a book, watching an episode of Netflix, meal-planning for the week, or going for a run, everyone needs some “me-time!”
- “I hate not being productive, so self-care sounds lazy”: Self-care does not mean you have to be lazy! It just means you don’t have the pressure of living up to other people’s standards of productivity. Working on your personal to-do list or having a bucket-list of things you want to do before your next birthday is definitely constructive…it’s just not assigned by your boss!
- “I’m too broke to treat myself”: #relatable. But for real, there are so many ways to slow down and relax that don’t break your bank account! Taking a walk, drinking a cup of coffee, scrapbooking, collecting coins, you name it! Pintrest is your best friend if you’re worried about money…there are people who have thought of this so you don’t have to!
